Engineered a novel and Innovative Heat Stress monitoring device.

As athletes, workers, and fitness enthusiasts push their limits, heat stress remains a silent but serious risk. To address this challenge, I designed a monitoring system built around the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index—a gold standard for evaluating heat safety.

The project combined Arduino-powered sensors with a custom-built interface to make heat stress information accessible and actionable. By capturing temperature and humidity data, the system calculated real-time WBGT values and displayed them through a Streamlit dashboard. The interface used intuitive, color-coded signals—green for safe, yellow for caution, and red for dangerous—to give users an instant understanding of their environment.

But I wanted the tool to go beyond static data. So, I integrated a chatbot powered by the OpenAI API that could respond to user questions with personalized guidance. Whether it was advice on hydration breaks, SPF use, or safe exposure limits, the chatbot acted as a digital companion for managing heat safety.

The system’s potential extends far beyond a school project. It holds practical value in fitness centers, sports training programs, and occupational safety settings, where heat exposure is a daily concern. To test its viability, I piloted the system at several Fitness Clubs/Gym here in the US and globally where it demonstrated its commercial and community value.

The project has also been recognized across multiple platforms. It won 1st Place at the School Science Fair, earned an Honorable Mention at the Plano District Science Fair, and received further acknowledgment at the Texas Junior Academy of Science (2024).

What started as a technical experiment turned into a platform for public health and safety innovation, proving how accessible tools can empower people to make better decisions in high-risk environments.
